    Your students become scientists during our 50-minute ScienceWorks Labs that provide hands-on experience with a variety of topics identified in the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations.  Each lab includes pre-visit and post-visit classroom activities.  Labs are available year-round for preschool to middle school students.

Math in Motion Level A (2nd-3rd)

ScienceWorks: Math In Motion Level A (2nd-3rd)

Make math fun and reinforce important skills. Practice place value, using simple coordinate systems and solving open equations while being a number in our math games. Register today!

Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations, Math v.12.05

  • Express numbers through 999 using place value...use concrete materials. (N.ME.02.05)
  • Find missing values in open sentences...use relationship between addition and subtraction. (N.MR.02.08)
  • Find and name locations using simple coordinate systems such as maps and first quadrant grids. (G.LO.02.07)
  • Find solutions to open sentences...using the inverse relationship between multiplication and division. (N.MR.03.12)
  • Given problems that use any one of the four operations with appropriate numbers, represent with objects, words (including “product” and “quotient”) and mathematical statements; solve. (N.MR.03.15)
  • Identify, describe, compare and classify two-dimensional shapes, e.g., parallelogram, trapezoid, circle, rectangle, square and rhombus, based on their component parts (angles, sides, vertices, line segment) and on the number of sides and vertices. (G.GS.03.04)

Math In Motion (level A) Pre-visit Materials

During Your Visit to the ScienceWorks Lab students will be expected to:

  • Sit in tables of 6 students and (at least) 1 adult
  • Students should be prepared to give their attention to the Lab instructors when requested to “Give Me Five”
  • Work cooperatively with one another at the table
  • Follow the hands-on procedures just as the Lab teacher or assistant explains them
  • Handle materials and equipment carefully

It is important that teachers and chaperones:

  • Help to focus the students’ attention
  • Assist students with the hands-on activities and experiments when necessary
  • Turn off cell phones and pagers during the class
